Background

A bisque doll is made of bisque, porcelain that is fired without a glaze. Instead of a glossy surface it has a matte, skin-like texture, and such dolls enjoyed their golden age in France and Germany from the 1860s to the early 1900s. Usually only the head is bisque; the body is cloth, kid leather or composition (a material made from sawdust and glue).
