About this doll

A 'lady doll' with an adult figure, dressed in white satin layered with pale blue pleats and a lace overskirt, and a lace hat. The collection record names her 'Stobe'; Anna Miller made her as a reproduction of an antique Jumeau lady.

The costume was made together with Femmy Toele of the Netherlands, a D.A.G artist who has made dolls since 1992 and is known for elaborate, historically researched costumes; she designed the costume of the 2019 D.A.G souvenir doll 'Elle'.

Background

Before the child-like 'bebe' appeared, the mainstream of French dollmaking was the 'poupee', the fashion doll with an adult woman's figure. Jumeau showed porcelain-headed fashion dolls in 1855 and sold them dressed in the latest Paris fashions on kid bodies. Records note that 65 seamstresses, tailors, leather workers and hat trimmers were employed on the costumes alone; the clothes were the heart of the product.

Fashion dolls gave way to bebes in the early 1880s, but today's porcelain artists love them as a canvas for recreating period dress. The painstaking costume of this doll carries on that tradition.
