About this doll

'Annika' has a brown bob with a red bow and wears a three-tiered red polka-dot dress. Her slightly downcast eyes and calm expression, so different from the big round eyes of an antique doll, are typical of the modern artist doll.

She is a modern reproduction made from a mold of a contemporary artist's sculpt; the sculptor and the maker are being confirmed.

Background

Porcelain dollmaking took off as a hobby in the United States in the 1970s. At first it centered on reproductions cast from antique dolls, but a 'modern doll' field soon grew up in which contemporary artists sculpted their own originals and sold the molds. Some companies, such as Expressions, founded by Dianna Effner in Missouri, specialized entirely in artist-designed molds.

Modern dolls aim at the natural expression and proportions of a real child and at contemporary dress, and the D.A.G curriculum has a separate 'Beautiful Doll (Modern)' track alongside antique reproduction. The painting, too, differs from antique reproduction in its emphasis on realistic eyes and skin tones.
