About this doll

'Jennifer' wears a taffeta gown shimmering between pink and blue with full sleeves, and a silver ornament in her red hair. Shirley Lloyd made her from a Vicki Hamilton sculpt.

The doll was made after the actress who played the heroine of 'The King and I', and she has a partner, a male doll representing the King (Ron Booker's Harte sculpt, in a rust-colored costume). The King is awaiting a repair to his leg and is temporarily absent from the exhibition.

Background

'The King and I' (1956) is a musical film produced by 20th Century-Fox and directed by Walter Lang, based on the 1951 Broadway musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Deborah Kerr played Anna Leonowens, governess to the Siamese court, and Yul Brynner played King Mongkut, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film won five Academy Awards in all, including Best Costume Design for Irene Sharaff.

The doll's wide taffeta skirt and glowing colors recall Anna's sweeping ball gown in the film.
