About this doll

'Phylis' wears a wide-brimmed hat trailing feathers, a brown patterned dress with a short jacket, a lace collar and gloves. Her red hair, blue eyes and the hand lightly holding her skirt recall a lady dressed to go out in the late nineteenth century.

She is the work of Shirley Lloyd; the sculpt and mold are being confirmed.

Background

The 'lady doll', with the figure of an adult woman, is a tradition that goes back to the Paris fashion dolls (poupees) of the nineteenth century. Those dolls also carried the latest Paris fashions to the provinces and abroad, and were sold with dresses, hats, gloves and fans.

Today's porcelain lady dolls are made from artists' molds such as those of Rose Pinkul and Vicki Hamilton, and the maker researches and tailors the period costume in miniature, making the hats and accessories herself. Shirley Lloyd left several lady dolls in this collection (Nos. 24, 25, 26 and 32), each with a costume and accessories from a different era and mood.
